Greed seems to be taking over the gaming industry, especially when it comes to the First-Person Shooter Genre. Games such as Half-Life spawned many mods and developed a large community, expanding and gaining popularity over a large period of time which is what a game should aim to achieve. Recently, it seems there’s just been a focus on pumping out sequels with that lovely 60 dollar price tag. These Sequels don’t add anything to the game but rather seem to take away from it.
Let’s use Call of Duty as an example. The sequels came out rather quickly, one year apart, making the previous game nearly obsolete for online play. This is most apparent when comparing Modern Warfare 1 and 2. The games seem to be identical while online achievements are mixed up in a different order. There’s also zero support for custom maps or the modding community. If you want more maps, it’s something like twenty bucks for four maps. Really? This is the future of the genre, and the community supports it. People may argue it’s a solid game, and fun to play, but that’s only because it’s the same as its predecessor, just repackaged.
The release of a map editor for the game and modding support would be a more welcomed release instead of multiple titles, but greed doesn’t allow for this or the community hasn’t spoken up to make it happen. Companies are focused on making games for money, but can only sell something we, the consumers, buy. If people don’t start speaking up in the future, the world of gaming is going to become a dark and unfriendly place, something that doesn’t look to be too far off. So next time you go out to buy a game, ask yourself, is it really worth buying?
