Don’t go downloading the latest software update (version 3.42) for your Playstation 3 this morning if you are enjoying the fruits of a jailbroken console. According to various reports across the Internet, the latest software update patches the exploit used for PS JailBreak, the USB dongle which allows Playstation 3 owners to dump games onto the system’s hard drive. Of course there are plenty of other solution to get the job done, PSGroove for instance, but the software update also affects those open-source solutions. The solution is simple, if enjoy a jailbroken console then refrain from installing all future software updates.
It looks like PS3 owners cannot escape the jailbreak hurdles which have plagued PSP owners for years. Sony and Apple officially have a lot more in common than we previously suspected and one can only wonder if Sony’s dominant control over their hardware will extend to the rumored Playstation phone later this year. In any event, the PS3 jailbreaking community will likely accept the challenge bestowed by Sony and distribute solutions very soon.
