The Nintendo 3DS began the year as one of the most exciting announcements at E3, but has quickly become a series of unfortunate events. Earlier this week we got word from Nintendo that the release date would be pushed back from late 2010 to early 2011. Officially the 3DS will now go on sale in Japan next February while the US and European markets will have to wait until March. An immediate impact was felt as Nintendo shares closed down 9.3% in Tokyo.
Fast forward to this morning and we now know the Nintendo 3DS will retail for $300, more than double the price of the DS or DSi. The reason for the high tag? Apparently all of the exuberant media coverage set of red flags for Nintendo and they realized it was time to capitalize on a hungry market. When the Nintendo 3DS reaches the US market next March, hopefully the $300 price tag drops to a more manageable $250 with a game, but only time will tell.
Until then we suggest that you start taking a look at the 3DS games available for pre-order and plan out your attack on portable gaming early. We’re sure the $300 price will not stop incredible sales and shortages of the handheld.
