If you are anything like me you hate the idea of ponying up $100 per pair of 3D Glasses for an already overpriced 3D TV. Thankfully a glasses-free 3D solution is currently under development by most major manufacturers, but leading the way is Toshiba with the Regza 20GL1 and 12GL1. The Regza 20GL1 is a 20-inch panel running at 1280 x 720 resolution while the 12GL1 is a 12-inch panel with 466 x 350 resolution. Both of these TVs were on display at this week’s Ceatec electronics show near Tokyo, Japan.
Toshiba claims the 3D technology is best suited for small displays and works by creating nine different perspectives of each single 2D frame, then those perspectives are superimposed by the viewer’s brain to create a three-dimensional impress of the image. It all sounds a bit geeky, but the end result is a significant savings, especially when you think about having a 3D Super Bowl party with 20 of your closest friends.
