On November 9 when Call of Duty Black Ops arrives in stores across the country there will be a twist, 3D.  All of the games modes — single player, multiplayer, zombies and training — can be played in 3D.  For the PS3 and Xbox 360; recent online updated to both consoles included the needed 3D upgrades.  PC users will need NVidia’s 3D vision ($182.99) and a 3D monitor (24″ Acer is $349) to join the fun.

While playing Call of Duty Black Ops there is an in-game option that lets you enable or disable 3D.  If 3D is enabled the game will run at 720P, allowing for smoother, faster frames rates that can help reduce eye strain.  Although 1080P is the talk of the town, the actual difference in content off a disc is minimal compared to broadcast television where lower bit rate and high compression demonstrate differences even between 720p and 1080i.

“We felt that a first-person shooter was probably one of the most logical choices for 3D in the environment,” Puryear says. “Especially when we look at how the artists, the level design and the things that we’re already doing, as far as the graphics, we are already producing the assets in 3D anyway. And now the character models really show and the environment really shows.”
