A sequel to the 1986 classic “Top Gun” is officially on the hunt for a producer according to Vulture. Rumors surrounding a Top Gun sequel began last June at a junket for Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice where Jerry Bruckheimer let slip that he had been “recently approached again to start talking about [a sequel]” but noted that “the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago.” Today Vulture has confirmed that both Bruckheimer and Tony Scott have received offers and Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) will update the script.
The man that actually made this all happen is the 27-year old son of Oracle Corp. founder Larry Ellison, David Ellison. Before David attended USC’s film school and launched his own production company, Skydance, he became both an aerobatic pilot and instrument-rated commercial pilot. This love for flying was born watching Top Gun on VHS as a 3-year old and clearly left a lasting impression. David’s ties to Paramount and Tom Cruise do not stop with the sequel, in July he left his Skydance production company and headed to JPMorganChase to raise $350 million to co-finance much of Paramount’s slate of films — the first of which will be Mission: Impossible 4.
There’s not much else known about the Top Gun sequel at this point, but as details develop we’ll be sure to fill you in. In the meantime throw on that Top Gun soundtrack and listen to Kenny Loggins take you to the Danger Zone one more time.
